Iowa Scholarships and Grants

Iowa scholarships and grants can make the process of going to school in Iowa much more affordable. Luckily, there are lots of Iowa financial aid options available for residents of this state. Whether you’re a high school senior or a returning student, there are grants and scholarships out there that can help you afford the cost of college. Here are some scholarships and grants to check out:

  • Iowa Grants for College

The state of Iowa offers many state-sponsored grants for students who are attending eligible Iowa colleges and universities. Students must be Iowa residents to apply, and they must be enrolled or be planning to enroll at least part time in an Iowa college or university. To apply for these grants, students must simply fill out the Free Application for Federal Student aid at This application is quick and free, and you must fill it out before March 10th to be considered for Iowa grants. If students show financial need according to the federal calculations used on the FAFSA, they are likely to be automatically awarded some grants from the state.

  • Iowa Scholarship for the Arts

The Iowa Scholarship for the Arts is supported by the Iowa Arts Council and seeks to support artistically talented youth in Iowa. Students must be Iowa residents to apply, and they must apply during the year they will graduate from high school. Students with artistic talents in the areas of dance, literature, music, theater, folk or traditional arts, or visual arts are all welcome to apply. In order to fain the scholarship, students must be accepted as full-time students at accredited Iowa colleges and universities.

The application for this award is due February 1st of each school year. Students must submit the application, a one-page essay, two letters of recommendation, and artistic achievement samples. Students can either use CDs or DVDs for the performing arts or literature samples for visual or literary arts. Visual artists can also email a PowerPoint presentation. Students who are in the final round of candidates will be required to attend interviews in Des Moines before the final selection is made.

  • All Iowa Opportunity Scholarship

This scholarship is a need-based program for students who perform well in high school. The program is funded by the state. Applications are due by March 1st each year, and students must fill out the FAFSA to prove their financial need. To qualify, students must be Iowa residents enrolled in qualified Iowa universities and colleges. Students must maintain a 2.5 minimum GPA and must enroll for at least three semester hours in a program leading to a degree. The maximum award amount for this scholarship is $7,141 at private or Regent universities in Iowa and $3,780 for community colleges in Iowa.

  • Governor Terry E. Branstad Iowa State Fair Scholarship

This scholarship is given annually to Iowa high school seniors who have actively participated in the Iowa State Fair. Students will be awarded $1,000 when chosen. This money can be used for educational expenses during the first year of college. Students must enroll at Iowa colleges and universities in order to use this award.

Students can apply for the award through The committee will consider things like exhibits and performances in the State Fair, financial need, an essay about the State Fair, extracurricular and community activities, community service, class rank, GPA, and letters of reference when choosing the students who will get the scholarship.

  • Iowa Tuition Grant

This is slightly different from the Iowa grants. This program offers students who are financially needy the opportunity to get money for college through state grants. The funds are given out based on the greatest financial need, and award amounts and numbers of awards may vary from year to year. Students must be Iowa residents attending Iowa colleges and universities. The award amounts range from a few hundred dollars to $3,700 per year of school. Students must fill out the FAFSA to be considered for these grants.

  • Robert D. Blue Scholarship

This scholarship of $500 to $1,000 is for Iowa students with literary and scholastic talents. The students must show moral character and be known for qualities of truth, courage, and fellowship. Students must also be Iowa residents and plan to attend Iowa colleges or universities to qualify for this award.

Each year, the application deadline is May 10th for this award. Students can complete an online application at With the application, they must also send a copy of their high school transcript, two letters of reference, and a five hundred word essay. Applicants will be chosen for the award both based on their academic achievement and their financial need.

  • Iowa Farm Bureau Federation Scholarship

Students who are children of Iowa Farm Bureau members can apply for this award. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in accredited colleges or universities, be high school graduates or about to graduate high school, and be majoring in an area related to agriculture or agribusiness. Acceptable majors include Ag Health, Ag Production, Ag Products and Processing, Ag Sales and Service, Agricultural Research, Conservation and Natural Resources, Economics, Education, Environmental Systems, Forestry, Horticulture, or Mechanization.

Students must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA throughout their college career to apply for this renewable scholarship. Students must also be considered a full-time student, which is generally recognized as taking twelve credit hours. Students can reapply for this scholarship for four years, and the $1,000 can be used toward tuition only.

The application for this scholarship must be postmarked by March 1st of the semester before the student wishes to obtain the scholarship.
