Like Berea, Alice Lloyd College is a liberal arts ‘work college,’ meaning that tuition is substantially reduced or completely absolved in exchange for work, either on- or off-campus. Alice Lloyd is located in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, and offers thirteen major degree programs. The vast majority of students go on to a graduate program. Students from 108 counties in the Appalachian region of Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, and Ohio pay no tuition at all, while those accepted from outside Appalachia pay a substantially reduced amount.
3. Webb Institute
Webb Institute, located in Glen Cove, New York, offers only one degree: a Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. A full-tuition scholarship is awarded to anyone, male or female, admitted to the program, and housing is provided on-site. Study is intense, with up to fifteen hours of schoolwork assigned for each day, though paid internships do allow the students to earn some spending money.
