Free Home Renovation Grants

Is your home in need of repair, but you just don’t have the money? There are programs out there to help you out of your situation. There are grants available from the federal government that do not need to be paid back.

State by State

Grants can be found at the state level and vary depending on the state in which you live. Some states do not have grants for home buying or improvements, but they do have very low interest loans, depending on where you live in the state.

Federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

This federal agency is set up to help with mortgage insurance programs that will help with the repair of homes that need rehabilitation. There are specific guidelines, though, in order to qualify for these funds. This agency also helps to fund state and local agencies with grant monies that they can distribute as needed on a more local level.

Department of Social Services

The Department of Social Services is responsible for help individuals with energy assistance. This program is for homeowners who qualify due to low income. The Department of Social Services will provide help in making someone’s home more energy efficient. This usually includes heating and cooling, windows, and weatherization.

The United Stated Department of Agriculture(USDA) and Department of Veteran Affairs (VA)

Both the USDA and the VA distribute grants depending on need and location of the person requesting help. The USDA offers help to people in rural areas or communities with populations of 10,000 to 20,000. Grants are offered to senior citizens who can’t afford to get a loan, with the expectation that the money will be used for making the property accessible and usable anyone in the house who has disabilities.

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers grant money to veterans with disabilities to allow them to get their household up to the living standards that will allow them to live at home. The nature and severity of the disability will determine the amount of money that the person will be granted.

Government Grants for the Elderly

As with many government grants, these grants are designed to help the elderly remain independent and in their own homes as long as possible. These grants can be used for home improvements and can be awarded to representatives of special groups, such as veterans or health care workers, or institutions, such as hospitals or schools.
