When someone is going to college, usually they get some form of financial aid, but there are people who also do the wrong thing through financial aid abuse. There are things that you can do do to stop financial aid abuse and here are some of the steps that you can take.
The first thing that you can do is to get in contact with the OIG through email. Send an email to this email address: .email@example.com. You have the option of providing your information on how to get in contact with you or you can remain anonymous. Include the information about the person committing the financial aid abuse and how the abuser can be contacted. Make sure that you are as detailed as possible about the circumstances.
The second option that you have is to contact the OIG hotline, through the number 1-800-647-8733. As you would with email, give the rep the information that you would have given in the email, including the violator’s information and the description of what happened. You can also give the person your information or stay anonymous.
The third option that you have is to download the form for complains on the OIG website and send it to the following address:
Inspector General’s Hotline
Office of Inspector General
U.S. Department of Education
400 Maryland Avenue, SW
Washington, DC 20202-1500
This form is going to ask for your information that identifies you as well as the information about what happened. If you are uncomfortable giving out your information, you can download the form that doesn’t include any questions which ask about your personal information.
These are the things that you can do when you know that someone has committed financial aid abuse. The one thing that you have to do is to make sure that you know that the person has committed the abuse before you report them. There should always be ample evidence that the abuse has been committed and this should not be done on a whim or because you are mad at someone.
Financial aid abuse is serious, because when someone is abusing the financial aid then someone else who would have taken their financial aid seriously may not have been able to get it. Help other people who needed financial aid and weren’t able to get it by reporting the people who have committed financial aid abuse and having them brought to justice.
